By Nancy Adams

If you are a student who is looking to join the university, then you must prepare and find accommodation in advance. Finding a good apartment when colleges are opening is never easy because of the high demand. However, this should not worry you because as long as you are well prepared, you should be good. Below are some simple tips to help you choose the best SMU Apartments.

One of the most important things a student should consider when selecting an apartment is the location. The location needs to be convenient. Think about your daily schedules and ensure that you choose a conveniently located house. For example, if you are working and studying at the same time, you should find a house that makes it easy for you to commute to work and school.

Consider connectivity. Well, this is not on the internet, but roads. When selecting a flat, ensure that it is connected to major transport networks. You might have a car, and you may not see a problem with staying away from the main roads. However, you may face challenges in case your car breaks down. Hence, choose a place that has a good network of public transport.

Choose an area with available social amenities. If you find a house that is 20 minutes from the nearest groceries store, you may pay less in rent but your running costs will be much higher. This is because of the fuel and time needed to travel to and from the stores. Hence, choose an apartment that is located in a well-serviced neighborhood.

Ensure that the rent is affordable. Check your budget and decide how much you would wish to spend on rent. Do not strain yourself as this may affect your studies negatively. Take your time to search for good houses that have low rent. Ensure that there are no additional charges that will affect your budget.

Consider the security of the location. If you are unfamiliar with the area, then ensure that your first apartment is located in a very secure neighborhood. The houses should have adequate security measures to ensure that tour personal belongings are safe. As a student, you might find yourself returning home very late into the night and you want to ensure that you reach home safely.

Consider how the management works. Most apartments are not built with students in mind, but they have been redesigned to meet the needs of students. Hence, there should be an on-site caretaker or manager to constantly address safety, maintenance, and counselling issues. However, most of the repairs should be done during holidays.

Consider the option of a house mate. If you are looking to cut costs, then this is a great idea. However, ensure that you find someone you are compatible with and will not make your life difficult.

A good apartment should also come with furniture. You do not want to be worrying about furniture when you are still in school. At the least, the management should provide bedding, and reading chair and table. Things such as on-site laundry facilities and Wi-Fi are also equally important.
