Adirondack Waterfront Property Includes Many Historic Homes

By Jennifer Bell

Anyone who has had the opportunity to visit upstate New York will attest to the natural beauty of the Adirondacks. Most people have their favorite times of year to travel here. It's no wonder that when Victorian high society discovered it, mansions sprang up all over the landscape. Today just a building lot on Lake Placid can cost a million dollars. Exclusive Adirondack waterfront property often mingles with the many historic buildings found here.

Once the rail lines and steamboats made it easy to get to, this area of the country was inundated by the Eastern elite. Hotels, resorts, and spas were constructed, each more elaborate than the other, to lure the most affluent Americans to travel from the heat and discomfort of the cities to the rocking chairs on their cool and peaceful verandas. Many were so impressed they built their own homes on the shores of Lake George. Millionaires' Row became the place to live and be seen.

Unlike their contemporaries who chose to build huge homes on tiny site in the Hamptons and Newport, Lake George residents bought plenty of land surrounding their cottages, as they called them. There are still great opportunities for the wealthy to purchase an estate, a home, or a building site in this exclusive area. When they do so, they will be in the company of a few palatial mansions that still exist.

The original estates were so massive that most of them have been turned into hotels and restaurants or torn down, with the land subdivided. One existing mansion recently available for sale is Wikiosco. The price tag for such luxury was nearly thirteen million dollars. The Tudor Revival boasts twelve bathrooms, and as many garages. There is a huge wine cellar in the home, and you can't beat the Lake George views from every angle.

Homes on Lake Placid are also available. For those who do not mind spending between four and eight million dollars, three story residences with eight bedrooms or so, around four or five thousand square feet of living area, and a private boathouse are being offered. Potential purchasers can expect to find numerous fireplaces installed, as well as private pools and tennis courts.

Not all properties in this area are private single family homes. There are town homes available, some in the half million to three quarter million dollar range. If you are interested in town home living, you will find that this real estate usually includes two to three stories, about three bedrooms, and a chef's kitchen. Some are even furnished.

It is possible to purchase waterfront real estate in the Adirondacks without breaking the bank. You can find great smaller homes with two or three bedrooms, covered porches, and access to community docks for less than five hundred thousand dollars.

The Adirondacks is a beautiful region of the country to live in. You can spend millions of dollars on an estate or enjoy the water in a smaller, but equally satisfying, home.
